One room, or one unit
15 Yard Dumpster Rental in Roanoke, VA
The size for a job with a boundary around it. A bathroom or a kitchen stripped to the studs, a garage emptied, a small tear-off, or one unit of a city rental turned over between tenants. It has enough volume to take a room’s worth of mixed material without becoming a container you have to ration, and it is still short enough to sit on a valley driveway with a grade on it. Where it stops is the point where masonry, tile or wet material makes up most of the load rather than part of it.
A 15 yard roll-off runs roughly sixteen feet long, eight feet wide and about four and a half feet tall, which is five or six pickup loads. It is the middle of the range in every sense: enough capacity for a single room taken back to the studs or a garage cleared out, still short enough to place on a drive where a twenty-two foot box would be a problem. Most people who book one are doing a job with a clear edge around it, and that is exactly what it is for.

Why people choose the 15 yard
The 15 is the container for a job you can describe in one sentence. One bathroom. One kitchen. One bedroom stripped. A garage emptied. A shed and a fence line taken out. One unit of a city rental turned over between tenants. In each case the volume is known before you start and the material is mixed rather than dominated by any single dense component, which is precisely the profile the 15 handles best. It matters here because roughly half of City of Roanoke housing is rented, so unit turnovers are ordinary weekly work rather than an occasional call, and a turnover produces a very consistent load: carpet, underlay, cabinets, a vanity, blinds, a mattress and whatever the previous tenant decided not to take with them. That is airy material with a couple of heavy items in it, and a 15 swallows it without complaint. Where the 15 stops being right is the moment the job loses its edge and turns into the whole house.
Weight is what decides the boundary, and there are three local materials that push a job down to the 10. The first is masonry: broken concrete, brick, block or a set of porch piers. The second is tile set in a mortar bed, which comes off older bathroom and kitchen floors with the bed still attached and behaves like masonry rather than like tile. The third is anything wet or rotten, which in this valley usually means crawlspace work. Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Vinton and Salem are all designated SEVERE for termite infestation probability, so a bathroom job here has an unhelpful habit of turning into a joist and subfloor job once the floor comes up. If that happens, the honest arrangement is a 10 for the framing and the masonry, loaded flat, alongside the 15 for the cabinets, the carpet and the general debris. Two containers loaded by material almost always cost less than one loaded by whatever pile was nearest the door.
A 15 is also the box we reach for on a small roof. Tear-offs are sized in squares and layers rather than in cubic yards, because a square is one hundred square feet of roof and a second layer of shingles roughly doubles the tonnage without changing the footprint at all. A single layer over an average house usually lands in a 15, and a small roof or a garage lands in a 10. Roanoke is a different roof market from the northern cities and the code says so: the local design criteria give a ground snow load of only 30 psf and record ice barrier underlayment as not required, and the annual snowfall normal is 14.8 inches according to NWS Blacksburg, which keeps the climate record for station ROA. What drives roof work here is age, wind, hail and the remnants of tropical systems reaching the Blue Ridge rather than ice damming. Wherever the box lands on a tear-off, it stays five feet off the eave line.
Placement is where the 15 earns its keep on a Roanoke property. At around sixteen feet it will sit on a good many drives that will not take a twenty-two foot container, including the short, graded drives common on hillside lots in South Roanoke, Grandin Court, Garden City and Cave Spring. A roll-off delivery is a gravity operation, so we look at whether the box will stay where it lands and whether the cable can pull it back up once it is full. On a tear-off in particular that recovery is the question, because shingles concentrate weight quickly and a 15 full of them is heavier than a 20 full of furniture. Boards go under the wheels and the rails on every driveway set. If the drive genuinely will not take a container, the options are the flattest ground on the property or a street placement, and a street placement in the City of Roanoke means a permit with ten calendar days of notice built into the schedule.
Good fit for
- One bathroom or kitchen stripped to the studs
- A bedroom or living room remodel
- One unit of a city rental turned over
- A garage or basement room cleared
- A single-layer roof tear-off on an average house
- Shed removal and a fence line
- A small deck off a hillside lot
- Mixed remodel debris with a clear boundary
Not the right size for
- A whole house emptied top to bottom
- Loads that are mostly concrete, brick or block
- Tile in a mortar bed as the bulk of the job
- Wet crawlspace contents in quantity
- Large county remodels running several rooms at once
- Commercial gut jobs and construction sites
Will it fit?
A 15 yard needs about sixteen feet of ground for the box itself, plus room for the door to swing at the back, so plan on around twenty-two feet of usable length. The truck wants roughly 60 feet of straight approach, about ten and a half feet of working width and 20 feet or more of overhead clearance for the hoist. In this valley the grade is usually the deciding factor rather than the width. Roll-off delivery works by gravity, so on a sloped drive we square the truck to the slope, spot the set from the low side and think about where a loaded container ends up rather than where an empty one starts. Overhead matters too, because mature street trees and the electrical service drop from the pole to the house both hang across older city drives. Plywood goes under the wheels and the rails on every driveway placement and we photograph the approach on arrival. The fire code follows the box wherever it goes: under International Fire Code § 304.3.3, carried into Virginia by the 2021 Statewide Fire Prevention Code at 13VAC5-51, any container of 1.5 cubic yards or more stays out of buildings and at least five feet clear of combustible walls, openings and combustible roof eave lines.
Before delivery, move cars and bins, mark irrigation heads and septic lids, and tell us about new concrete, soft or made ground, a steep or hillside-cut drive, or a service drop hanging under the tree canopy. Plywood goes under every wheel and under both rails as standard. Our delivery and driveway protection guide and our steep driveway guide cover the rest.

Is a 15 big enough for a kitchen?
For most kitchens, yes. Cabinets, counters, appliances, flooring and the board behind them are bulky rather than heavy, and a 15 takes that comfortably. The thing that changes the answer is tile. Older Roanoke kitchens and bathrooms often have tile bedded in mortar, and it comes off with the bed attached, which makes it masonry in everything but name. If a serious area of tile is coming out, put it in a 10 loaded flat and keep the 15 for the cabinetry and the general debris. Tell us what the floor is made of when you call and we will size it properly the first time.
Can I do a roof tear-off in a 15?
Often, and it depends on squares and layers rather than on how big the house looks. A square is one hundred square feet of roof, and a second layer of shingles roughly doubles what comes off without changing the area at all. A single layer over an average house generally fits a 15. Two layers, or a larger roof, moves you to a 20. Architectural shingles weigh more per square than the old three-tab, so mention the type. And if the decking is coming off with the shingles, say so, because plywood changes the profile of the load.
What is the difference between a 15 and a 20 in practice?
About one room, or one weekend. A 15 handles a job with a boundary around it, and a 20 handles a job that keeps going: a crawlspace and an attic over the same few weekends, a multi-room remodel, a whole floor cleared. The 20 is the Roanoke default because that open-ended job is the Roanoke default. If you are genuinely unsure, describe the pile on the phone rather than guessing, because the wrong call in either direction costs money. Ordering slightly larger is usually the cheaper mistake with airy household material, and the more expensive one with anything dense.
Will it fit on my driveway?
Usually, but the grade is worth a conversation. Plan on around twenty-two feet of usable length once the door swing is included, roughly ten and a half feet of width and 20 feet of overhead clearance for the hoist. On the hillside drives common in South Roanoke, Grandin Court, Garden City and Cave Spring, the real questions are whether the container will stay put once it is loaded and whether the cable can recover it. We walk the approach before anything comes off the rails and put boards under the wheels and the rails on every set. Send a photo of the drive if you would rather not describe it.
Do I need a permit for it?
Not on your own driveway, normally. In the public right-of-way the answer depends on whose street it is, and this valley has four different answers. On a City of Roanoke street it is the City’s Dumpster and Portable Storage Container Permit: applied for at least ten calendar days ahead, valid a maximum of 30 consecutive days, with a million dollars of per-occurrence liability naming the City as an additional insured, cones and reflective tape at all times and a ten-foot travel lane kept open. On a Roanoke County subdivision street the road is usually the state’s under the Byrd Road Act, so ask the VDOT Salem District first. Salem and Vinton run their own systems.
